Making sushi at home - that's how it works!

recipes sushi

Are you at home a lot right now and don't feel like ordering the same food all the time? We want to show you how you can easily prepare sushi yourself at home. You will need a sushi mat, a little time, and the following ingredients:

  • 500 g rice
  • 700 ml of water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ tbsp sugar
  • 80 ml rice vinegar or 1/2 pack Tamanoi vinegar mixture
  • Nori sheets
  • vegetables
  • fish
  • To taste: soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger

First step:
You need about 500 g sushi rice for four people - we recommend our premium rice from Shinmei. You cook the washed rice either in a pot or in a practical rice cooker, if available. When the rice is ready, add rice vinegar, sugar and salt to the rice (alternatively half a pack of Tamanoi) and gently stir the entire mixture many times. Cover the mixture with a kitchen towel until the rice has cooled down a bit.

Second step:
Now you can wash a cucumber and cut it into strips about 10 cm long. Avocado, paprika or other vegetables are also suitable for sushi. Just trust your taste. You also wash the salmon or another fish of your choice, dry it with a cloth or kitchen roll and cut the fillet into strips as well.
By the way, you can usually get good advice about fish at the fresh produce counter in the supermarket.

Third step:
Now you take a nori sheet, place it on your sushi mat and spread the rice over the bottom two thirds of the nori sheet. Then there are vegetables and the fish. The trick is to roll the whole thing up tightly while distributing the ingredients evenly. It is best to place the toppings on the lower third of the rice bed and roll the mat with the contents firmly upwards.

Fourth step:
Now you will need a sharp knife to cut the rolls into bite-sized pieces. I'm sure you like your sushi with spicy wasabi? Or do you have pickled ginger with it? The Maki rolls are briefly dipped in delicious soy sauce and will surely disappear quickly in your mouth at the end. 😊

"Hosa Maki" is that easy. It's best to try it yourself, because rolling sushi and drinking sake with it is really fun. Perhaps you will soon feel like trying other types of sushi? Write to us if you have a crazy creation of your own!
