A wooden rice spoon in the shamoji tradition, the scoop that lives next to the rice cooker in just about every Japanese kitchen, here in a simple 22 cm form from Tokyo Design Studio.

The broad scoop is built for one job: lifting and folding cooked rice without crushing it. Where a metal spoon smears and tears the grains, wood slides underneath and keeps each one whole, so your rice stays fluffy and separate. The softly rounded edge cuts down cleanly when you portion and serve.

Wood has a second advantage. Hot rice clings to it far less than to metal or plastic, so serving is tidier and the spoon stays gentle on your cookware, non-stick pots included. The handle sits comfortably in the hand for mixing and scooping.

Product details:

  • Japanese-style rice spoon
  • Safe for all cookware, including non-stick
  • Ergonomic handle
  • Length: 22 cm
  • Material: Bamboo

How to use it:

  • Wet the spoon briefly with water before you start and between scoops. A damp shamoji is the trick that keeps rice from sticking.
  • Hand-wash with mild soap and let it dry fully; skip long soaking and the dishwasher so the wood stays in good shape.
